Before You Plan Your Harpeth River Kayak Adventure

By Eric Bell

Everybody has been enjoying the great outdoors for a while now starting from the past decade. Many are now appreciating nature and want to be a part of it on their vacations. Your friends may have suggested that you all plan a Harpeth River Kayak adventure vacation in the future. Before you do decide on this event, then please do read on in this article for more information.

Prior to anything else, do prepare a checklist to assist you in your final decision. Having events and plans that will require the spending of money, will necessitate the use of a checklist. This checklist will make sure that you leave nothing to chance and that all major concerns and related matters considered of and mulled over.

The first item on your checklist should be something relating to your health in general. Assess the current state of your overall health and physical condition and be honest with yourself as to your comfort and survival rate so to speak on this trip. This trip will be quite exhausting, and will take anywhere from one to three days tops, depending on what you want to do.

Decide If you will be going by yourself or in a small group. Definitely things are much better in a group of a few people since these kinds of trips are best made in groups. Should you be traveling in a group, huddle up days before your intended trip and plot out your itinerary s that each and every one will get something out of the trip that is to his or her liking. In this way, everyone will enjoy the trip more.

It is recommended you get a map of the river and how it courses through the area. Study the points of entry wherein you and your group can enter and exit the river. Also identify places that will be marked as having whitewater rapids and such and avoid those for now, unless you are very skilled in kayaking already. A good rule of thumb is that rough patches of water usually occur in areas where tributaries will flow into the main Harpeth River.

It is very much recommended that you get a good guide for your group. Not only must they be amiable and knowledgeable on the area but must have a good track record as well. This track record must of course include the number of accident free trips that he or she has conducted in the past years with groups similar to yourselves. He or she will know all the quirks that the river has to offer. These quirks can be sudden changes in currents and speed, especially as you travel around corners and bends.

Also you will be getting a few items to bring with you also, and you need not over pack. To know exactly what you need to bring on such a trip, do further research by joining forums that deal with the subject of kayaking on the Harpeth and ask around. More than likely someone on the forums will be able to give you some tips and such, especially those who have already gone on such a trip.

In sum this article has shown some of the basic considerations you need to mull over before taking on this trip. It will not hurt also to add items related to prices and peak season rates, for these of course will also affect your pocket greatly in the long run.
