The materials used for making canoes evolved as their uses also changed. In traditional settings they were made using roots of the white pine, hot spine resin, spruce bark, and birch bark. Their body was held together and joints sealed to make them waterproof using hot pine resin. Spruce and birch trunks were used due to their being lightweight, resilient, waterproof nature and smoothness.

There was introduction of new materials to increase portability, aesthetics and durability. Nevertheless, it is evident that all materials have disadvantages and advantages. Manufacturers work to achieve a balance between expected use and the cost of the vessel. They also work to achieve a compromise between the material used and the canoe shape. More recent materials used in making them are composite, polythene, Kevlar, fiberglass and royalex.
