Ketchikan Salmon Fishing For Food And Fun

By Susan Brown

Salmon is one of the most expensive fishes on the market, so it makes sense that some people will want to catch their own instead of paying market prices, With so many heart healthy benefits, it is a good idea to get some into your diet each week. You can do so by going on a Ketchikan salmon fishing charter to catch some.

Southern Alaska is home to Ketchikan, which has been dubbed to be the Salmon Capital, not just of the state or country, but the entire world. A big reason is the locals, who love to fish, but also the fact that it is nearby sources of all five Pacific salmon types.

Even as tourists flood in to fish for the salmon, there is never a risk of the area being overfished. This is due in large part to the effort of the state and local conservationists. They operate several hatcheries to ensure that the number of schools in the area stays high so that they never become rare or endangered in terms of their population.

In order to catch them at the right time, you will want to go sometime in the summer. The season for these fish is from May to late September, so make your plans for late spring or anytime in the summer. This is when they make their yearly trek through local waters, so there are many very easily accessible spots. If you cannot go in summer, there are other fishes you can catch in the same waters.

If you are feeling really adventurous, you can choose to get a charter that allows you to find some King salmon to land. These gigantic specimens can weight up to 50 pounds, which can really fill your freezer if you land one. They are very energetic and do not give in easily, so you will really fight them in a fun game of man vs. Beast to get it on board. If you want to catch plenty but have an easier time, ask to go where the Cotto or Silver varieties are located, as these weight far less. Catch them using the onboard equipment, or bring your own.

Each boat tour can hold multiple people, and they have many different tour lengths. The shortest is generally four hours, which gives you the morning or afternoon to go fishing, and the rest of the day to relax in the scenic local area. There are some that run all day though, depending on just how much you want to catch.

If you like to make new friends or just meet others from different areas or walks of life, then the public charters are for you. With a public one, you and your group share a boat with one or more other groups to get the boat full.

Many of the groups might be cruise ship passengers who are taking an Alaskan cruise and want to go fishing on their excursion. However, if you prefer a private charter, one can be arranged for an additional cost.

If you live nearby, you can just drive to the meeting place for your trip. If not, book a package deal to save money that includes lodging. There are plenty of cabins and motels that will be happy to put you up.
