Get In On An Alaska Day Fishing Charter

By Carolyn Brown

When Americans think of wildlife and wide open spaces where they can fish or hunt and live off the land, most think immediately of Alaska. With so much space untouched by human housing or development, it is a great place for angling enthusiasts and beginner fishermen alike to find ample supplies of prized fish that can fill your belly and your freezer for weeks or even months to come. All you need to do is book an Alaska day fishing charter.

There are many charter companies to choose from, and they all can outfit you with all the poles and bait that you need to catch as many fish as you desire, up to any legal limits. Speaking of legal stuff, they usually also supply you with an official fishing license, though you should discuss that when you book to make sure. If they do not supply it for you, they are easy to get from a local supermarket or fishing or outdoor supply store. You are of course welcome to use your own poles if you have them.

One of the most popular types to fish for is halibut. Some locals refer to them as the barndoor of the sea because they can weight well over a hundred pounds, which means you can really fill your freezer with weeks worth of food.

Most of the best spots are further out into the water, so you cannot fish from them in a shallow boat near the shore. You need a guide to take you on a larger vessel to the best spots, which can often be at least an hour or much more away from the shore. That is why it is best to get at least a half day charter, if not a full day one. Since you can catch these creatures during any season, you can book one of these trips all year round.

If you want salmon, then Alaska is definitely the place to go. This is the other really popular fish from these waters that everyone wants to fill their freezer with. But unfortunately, they are only available in summer, so you really have to be willing to book for that season.

Since salmon is such a delicacy that many people love, these limited summer charters often fill up quite quickly. You will want to book in advance, especially if you are going on what is called a fly-in trip. This is a journey on a small plane to go to a more secluded spot where there are fewer anglers to compete with, though there is plenty of wildlife like bears.

Bears love salmon too, as it is delicious and full of nutrients they need after a long winter of hibernating. Thankfully, your guide is experienced in dealing with bears and any other wildlife you may encounter to keep you safe. You may actually be able to hunt some of that wildlife if you book a combo trip.

Though polls, bait, and tackle are usually included with most bookings, you will still be expected to have the rest of the needed gear. This means sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and the right clothing that is appropriate for the season. If you show up without the appropriate gear, you can buy it from a local outdoor supply or Army surplus store.
