Different Types Of Surfboard Socks

By Dennis Scott

Surfboards are notorious for getting nicks and dings and other damage from use. When storing and transporting them it is important to protect them from more potential damage. Damage to these increases risk to safety and can compromise the integrity to the board itself. Using a protective covering can minimize the damage and keep a board looking clean and well maintained. Surfboard socks and other types of protective covering will allow them to last longer.

Three types of protective covers dominate the industry. Each one is a step up from the previous. Using a sock is the most basic type of protection and is a step up from using towels for protection. The next two types are bags with varying thickness of the padding. Any of these can protect the surfboard from scratches and some will go even further. The other two types are called bags and coffins.

The typical basic protection comes in the form of the sock. The material is lightweight and very easy to fold up for storage. It will provide simple protection from scratches but is not good at keeping boards cool when lying in the sun. If you leave it in the sun be sure to remove the sock so the wax won't melt inside and cause a mess.

The bag is the next step up and is more sturdy and protective than a sock. The handle makes it easy to carry. There is usually about 5 millimeters of padding to help shield it from bumps and scratches. It is also designed to help protect the board from the hot sun on the beach. This will keep the wax from melting when your board is not in use. Using one of these is a big step up from using a sock for protection.

The coffin is another type of bag. This is more sturdy with much thicker padding. Not only will it keep the board cool in the sun, but will protect it better from bumps and dings while in transport. This type is recommended for air travel or other situations where the surfboard will be handled by different people on the trip. They are also big enough to carry several boards.

When you have pride in your board you can get a custom sock made. Many professionals and dedicated surfers like to have their own personal logo on both the boards and the covers that go with them. Many outlets offer this service and will put your logo on anything you desire. Surfers with an artistic flair can also design their own and have them made. This is a popular option for surfers that have corporate sponsors since they can get the company logos placed on the bags as well.

Do it yourself options are becoming more popular. For those that are not needing the more sturdy bags, making their own sock is an option. Using Lycra to make the sock will help by making it just stretchy enough that a snug fit can be achieved without making it impossible to get a board in and out. There are many different patterns to choose from. This is a better option that stacking boards with a towel in between since it will protect the wax on each board.

It is incredibly important to protect your surfboard from the sun and damage due to travel. Having a smooth and well-waxed board makes all the difference on the waves. Protect your investment by providing the right coverage for the environment you are in. If you're traveling, get a sturdy bag to protect the board from baggage handlers. With a little investment, you can protect it and make it last longer.
