Useful Tips On How Marine Pile Drivers Are Used

By Kenneth Reynolds

Piles are basically load bearing building elements that are used to primarily transmit structural loads through the soil. Piles are majorly used to provide support to buildings located in areas that have poor soils. It basically consists of piles which can be made of timber, steel or concrete. The piles are then driven deep in to the ground till they reach the bedrock. This is worth knowing about marine pile drivers.

Bedrocks are hard underground rocks. Meaning that once the piles have been driven to that depth they cannot go further. At this depth they provide stability to elements on top of it. They come in two main types. The two are end bearing pile and friction pile. Both types are applied in different situations.

End bearing piles are used when the load is transmitted into the soil through the lower tip. Many piles depend on the combination of friction and end bearing for their supporting strengths. They may be classified of the basis of either their use or from the materials from which they are made. Selecting proper piles to use is very important and the selection should be done carefully.

Engineers are responsible for selecting the kind of piles to be used. They need to select the kind of piles that best fit a particular task and also consider all the conditions influencing both installation process and functionability. Selection piles are influenced by several conditions such as the weight and size of the structure that need to be supported.

It could be a residential or commercial building structure or just a simple structure such as water tanks. The physical properties of the soil also matter. The availability of the material for the piles and the number of piles required in order to support the structure. It is also important to establish how deep the piles need to go in order to support the structure.

The depth to which they need to be driven is very crucial in determination of the type of pile driver to be applied. Piles are usually driven underground using load drivers. Before piles are driven, the type of driver to be used must be determined is advance. Factors like basic penetration test, geotechnical study and site study are crucial in determining the driving device. Load test in which the total load to be carried by the piles is determined is another very important test.

When piles are driven underground the force that is used to support then is the same force that causes resistance to piles as they are being driven underground. In order to deal with this this is where the drivers come in. They help furnish the energy required to drive the piles underground.

The commonest tools used are driving hammers for piles. They include diesel hammers. The hammers are used in imparting compression and explosion energy required in the process. The other type of hammer is the vibratory hammer. This one uses shafts spinning in opposing direction to drive the piles through the soil.
