Understanding Gun Safety To Reduce Chicago IL Gun Violence

By Clayton Maske

If you own a firearm of any kind there are basic rules you must understand and follow in order to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. Chicago IL gun violence is just one example of what can happen when guns are used as weapons. Regardless of your age and religious or political beliefs these fundamental steps will help ensure your protection.

There are 3 fundamental rules advocated by the NRA (National Rifle Association) for gun safety:1. Your finger must ALWAYS be kept off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Hold a gun correctly by resting your finger either along the side of a gun, or upon the trigger guard. Never touch the trigger until you're ready to fire.

The person with the firearm should never, under any circumstances, point the weapon at another individual or in the direction of an unintended target. Accidents happen all the time, many with dire consequences. If you have a gun in your possession, it should be aimed at the ground.

Leaving a weapon unattended can have disastrous results. Every time you pick up a firearm you should check to see whether or not there are bullets in the chamber. Never presume a gun is unloaded. You must know for a fact that it is not. If you don't know how to tell, leave it in the hands of someone who does.

Every year there are tragic news stories reporting accidental shootings involving children. Victims number several hundreds, and those numbers include individuals who mistakenly shoot themselves.

The Everytown group is a pro-Second Amendment organization, which teaches families with guns in their homes to train their children and other family members about smart gun ownership.
