By Paul Watson

A unique sport type which is played through riding above long boards is called as long boarding. One of its common uses is for competing in races held in down hills. Typically, the speed of expert riders would exceed to 50 miles in just one hour. Longboards are produced in many different shapes and different sizes not like the skateboards. Also, it has better stability, traction, and durability due to its large sized wheels. These wheels also have lower durometers. Mostly, longboards are made with trucks which contain geometric parameters just like the skateboards.

There are still a lot of ways in which these are being used and one of it is for traveling or transportation. The longboard skateboards are made many different shapes such as long, short hybrid type, or wide cruiser. The truck is being made loose for having a sharper turn. A kick tail can be very useful when doing a corner on sidewalks or doing a lift at the front when in curbs.

Another use of it is for free rides. A free riding in Escondido, CA involves many types of tricks like early grabs where in the person riding will grab one side of the board and will thrust upwards to fly in a medium speed. Usually, the decks are made symmetrical and have kick tails in both of the sides to allow tech slides. Mostly, decks in free rides are very similar to boards utilized in down hills.

Third, down hills long boarding. In this purpose, a person may do ride in the fastest speed possible in downhills, but the speed needs to be controlled. In this case, there might be a possibility that speed would go up to 80 miles in just one hour. One common problem for beginners are the speed wobbles but these can be controlled by most expert riders. Long boards decks used in downhill are classified into 6 groups. These are double top, topmount, drop deck, drop thru, flush mount, and micro drop.

These types of decks have become very popular in the past years but have fell due to its unresponsiveness. Majority of downhill longboards are made from wood. Other materials utilized for its construction include baltic birch, bamboo, maple, aluminum, carbon nano tubes, and carbon fiber. Downhill and free ride boards may be similar. Their only difference is that downhill boards are directional and free ride boards are symmetrical in its front and back.

Longboarders who often play in downhills have been using the RKT or reverse kingpin trucks. These are important to better hold the traction and also to easily handle the speed. Other types of trucks like seismic or torsion trucks and other planet or cam trucks. Downhill trucks have two categories, the precision and cast trucks.

Another use of these is for dancing in which it involves many tricks like spinning and walking. This is originated from surfing, specifically in board walking. Dancing boards usually are 45 inches or more in its length and 12 inches wide.

Another purpose is for cruising. These types contain the ability for better turning. Cruiser types are very similar to skateboards when it comes to length. Mini longboards are usually used when commuting since it has the ideal size.

Sixth and last purpose to travel on long distance places. Any types of skateboards may be utilized when traveling to long distance places and the decks used are lower compared to regular types. Having a lower deck would increase stability and easier braking and pushing.
