Why You Should Use Surfboard Socks

By Steven Johnson

Those that enjoy going surfing are quaintly aware of the need to make sure their stuff is protected. Having the board sitting around without any protection, whether it is on the beach or in a garage, leaves it open to minor and more serious damage. There are several ways to provide this needed protection by using surfboard socks and other devices. They cover it to protect it from the sun and dents and dings from being moved around.

There are a couple of types available. The first is the sock that provides basic protection and can be used in conjunction with the other types. The bag is a step up and has some padding. The most protective device is called the coffin because of its size. Using them for the various levels needed is a good idea to protect your investment.

The type of protection the sock provides is from everyday use. When storing the board, it can get dusty and the wax can dry and chip. Having the board in a sock will help protect it from the elements. When putting it in the vehicle to head to the beach, this is very least protection needed. Other options should be used with the sock and not without.

The second level is the bag. This provides more padding and can protect the wax on the board from melting in the hot sun. The padding is adequate for traveling from home or hotel to the beach. It'll keep it from getting banged up when someone bumps into it or it is dropped. The extra padding will also keep whatever is inside cool when it sits in the sun for a while. This means the wax won't melt and leave a mess in the bag.

Coffins, or thicker bags, are the final step. These are made for travel. They're big and hold many boards. While each board should have its own sock within the coffin, these will have much more padding than the bag level. They can help protect them from baggage handlers and scanners at airports when you're flying from one beach area of the world to another.

Designing your own logos and splash is a great way to show off your own brand. It's easy enough to get a corporate sponsor to provide you with a bag or sock that represents their brand, but having one in your own will help get you known and show you're serious about the sport.

It's possible to create your own. The material you use should either be preshrunk or Lycra or other flexible material. You will need access to sewing equipment and some skill in sewing. If it is made with cotton you must make sure you size it correctly. Lycra can stretch a bit, so it's fine to make it a bit snugger.

There is absolutely no reason to keep your board in a way that is unprotected. Even if you're just lounging on the beach while you wait for the surf to get going, you should protect it from the sun and sand. Making the investment will give a much longer life to your board and protect it while you travel.
