Types Of Martial Arts Oklahoma City OK

By Susan Martin

Combat has always been a part of cultures simply because war was inevitable among people from various states. Of course, there was a time when the nuclear bombs, cannons, and guns did not even exist yet, so the only weapon people had were armed close range weapons and their fists. That was where martial arts oklahoma city ok became categorized based on their technical style.

The first category which is probably the most common would be the striking category. Basically, this type of combat sport makes use of kicks, punches, and basically any type of striking. It is not uncommon for strikers to also make use of palm hits, pounds, knees, elbows, headbutts, and many other moves that cause damage.

Some of the specific combat arts that are more striking based are muay thai, western boxing, jeet kune do, wu shi, capoeira, karate, and taekwondo. While there are some arts in this list that incorporate some ground game, the moves would usually focus more on strikes. These strikes are aimed to do extensive damage and deal a knockout.

The second category for combat style would be the wrestling or grappling style. Unlike striking, punches and kicks are rarely used as the practitioners are more focused on locking the opponent and breaking joints or smashing them to the ground. Some arts include jiu jitsu, BJJ, aikido, xan shou, classic wrestling, judo, and pankration.

Now, one of the most interesting things to know is that wrestlers realized a weakness of strikers when it came to fighting on the ground. Since wrestlers are more adept at ground fighting, they had an advantage over strikers when strikers are brought down to the floor. Because of that, strikers created a move called the sprawl which prevented the strikers from being brought to the ground.

The final category would be the armed category wherein weapons are the main focus. Now, weapons were actually used in war by the soldiers of old such as the sword and shield. These weapons were used for killing off an opponent during the wars and were used along with hand to hand combat skills.

For those who are curious about the styles that use weapons, these are kendo, arnis, and fencing. Now, one may think that once the weapon is gone, then the fighter will no longer be able to fight. The principle belief is that weapons are just extensions of the body so even if the weapon is gone, the movements are still the same.

For those who are interested in taking up a fighting style, these are the three main categories to choose from. Take note that there is no better art than the other as each have their own respective strengths and weaknesses. It would be better to become an all around fighter with knowledge of all but with a specialization of one. That way, one will be able to enhance the strengths of each of them and cover their respective weaknesses in the process.
