On the contrary, the highest rank in BJJ is represented by the black belt.

It is thought by most individuals that every practitioner engages in competitions. In fact, this is wrong since most BJJ practitioners engage in the art for other purposes other than competition. Some individuals participate so that they can gain skills, physical fitness, exercise, self-defense, pass free time, and as a hobby. Individuals from every type of profession go for classes including of plumbers, nurses, fire extinguishers, law enforcement personnel, teachers, lawyers, and doctors.

BJJ classes are not provided free of charge. One has to pay some fee for each session they engage in. Payments might also be done every month as fee for registration. In most studios, classes can be modified to suit the tight schedule of busy customers.
