Girls lacrosse also goes by the name womens lacrosse and is often shortened to wlax or simply as lax. Wlax is a sport that was originally played by the indigenous people of the Americas. The modern version of the game was introduced at St Leonard school in St Andrews Scotland. This happened in the year 1890. The version of the sport played by women is governed by very different rules from those that govern the masculine version of the sport. When one needs to watch girls lacrosse New Jersey is the place to go.

Typical match pits two teams on a match field. Both teams must be comprised of twelve members each. Out of the twelve members one of them must act as a goalkeeper just like in similar games like soccer and hockey. It is a rule that the ball used must be yellow. This rule can only be overlooked if the two teams in question settle for a ball of a different color.

A match is split to two halves and lasts for 60 minutes. During a match in the United States each team playing is allocated two 2 minute timeouts. The head coach or a player who is currently in the field can request for a timeout. For a timeout to be awarded, the side calling for the timeout must be possessing the ball at the time they choose to do it.

During time outs all players must leave their sticks on the pitch as they go. The sticks must be in the same position each player was in before the time out. It is a requirement that every player resumes their initial position when the time out is over. No substitutions are supposed to take place during a time out.

The year 2000 was characterized by several changes in the rules that govern wlax. Initially, the players arranged themselves on the field in that there were three attackers, five midfielders, and three defenders. With the changes in the rules, the players arrange themselves on the field in a way that there are four attackers, four defenders, and three midfielders. The defenders play very closely to each other.

The four defenders movements are limited by a line which is marked in the field. The line prevents the goalkeeper and defenders from crossing it and going to an offensive position by. The four attackers too are prohibited from crossing the line and going in to a defensive zone. In the case of an attacker or defender crossing the line they are thought to be offside and attract a major foul.

Generally the rules are set such that there is little or no contact between opposing players. With little contact among players chances of injuries are greatly reduced. What this means is that protective gear is almost not required at all. So far the only gears worn are face and mouth guards. The shape of face guards used resembles that of goggles. The gears are used on not used depending on the law governing sports in a particular state.

In this sport the ball is always round and made from rubber. Every equipment used in the game have to meet ASTM requirement standard F803. The standards may occasionally be different considering the level of play. Sufficient protection to the teeth while playing must be provided by the inter-oral mouthpiece. It is not allowed to have protruding tubs in the game.
