Several Methods Used In Gator Hunts

By Jason McDonald

Alligators are big crocodilian reptiles with American species being native to the southeaster United States which inhabits cypress swamps, marshes and other freshwater wetlands. They differ from American crocodile with their overlapping jaws, broader snout and darker coloration. They tolerate color climates more when compared to crocodiles that prefers tropical climates.

Several people want to experience hunting or harvesting them because of different reasons though this is a dangerous activity. You could go to gator hunts together with other people having the same interests with preferably and experienced one accompanying you. There are various equipment, techniques, and practices used to capture them.

Each state have various legal methods to hunt them so familiarize first what these are that your state has allowed. Alligators are hunted at night usually if the state allows it and locating them is through their reflective eyeshine which glow red when lighted. The following are different methods to capture them when in range that you can use.

Wire snares are affixed to restraining lines that is mounted loosely to poles using pieces of tape or small rubber bands. These are usually used to secure the gator after it was snagged or harpooned and subdued near the boat. They could also be used as initial capture technique though they cannot be left alone because they must be hand held.

Gigs or harpoons might be used in affixing restraining lines to the alligators and a penetrating point connected to restraining line consist it. These penetrating points can be a straightened fishhook, detachable dart, fish gig or spear point. A gig is jabbed while harpoons are normally mounted on a pole, spear or arrow shaft then thrown.

Snatch hooks are a weighted treble hook attached to line being used in attaching to a gator. These can be either hand held or are combined with long stout fishing rod with reel and would be cast over an alligator or where it had last submerged. They will be retrieved until they made contact and must remain tight while the animal is not yet tired.

Baited hook is like fishing alligators practically and are set during the day though the intent is capturing them overnight. Doing this will involve having it suspended above water and inspecting it everyday with rotten chicken as the best bait. Sets are created usually with a rubber band, rope, an anchor, large hook, leader, and long cane pole.

Bangsticks are hunting equipment commonly for alligators and is a safe and effective tool in killing them humanely. This can be done by having their shot immediately centered behind the skull cap with its angle towards the brain. They must be discharged below waterline for reducing possible aerial dispersal of bone fragments as well as bullet.

Guns can be used also though before dispatching the alligator using a bangstick or a gun, they should be captured first. Most firearms are capable to dispatch gators but this depend still on the user and his skills. Hunting is dangerous not only due to the animals but because of the tools you use.
