Mentally, the sport develops self-discipline, alertness, precision, self-confidence, and daring.

When one becomes an expert at gymnastics, they become self-confident and their self-esteem is highly built upon. Working with the various pieces of equipment also requires overcoming certain fears, such as the fear for heights, water, and obstacles. Also, performing before an audience also requires overcoming the fear for audiences and building self-confidence. By overcoming a phobia and conquering a new skill, a sense of pride and personal accomplishment is built.

From a cognitive perspective, the rate of retention in learner is higher when movement is included in the learning process. This ability to learn using movement can be transferred to the classroom to increase focus and concentration. In essence, gymnasts have better understating rates than people who do not do gymnastic routines.
